http://www.railjournal.com/ , June 6, 2006 - First Great Western, Britain, has awarded a Ł63 million contract to Bombardier for the refurbishment of 405 passenger coaches and a contract for bogie overhauls worth up to an additional Ł85 million.
The first refurbished coach for First Great Western’s fleet of 200km/h high-speed trains (HSTs) will enter service in November with the entire fleet due for completion by December 2007.
The refurbishment programme will involve fitting of new seating, at-seat power points, toilets and carpets, as well as the application of the operator’s new livery.
Bombardier will also carry out bogie overhauls on the HST fleet for the remainder of First Great Western’s 10-year franchise.

Der neue Vertrag ging aus einer längeren Zusammenarbeit in den vergangenen Jahren hervor.
EWS wird vor den Zügen meist moderne Lokomotiven des Typs Class 67 einsetzen, aber auch der Einsatz von Dampflokomotiven ist vorgesehen. Die Luxuszügen stammen aus den 30er Jahren.

http://www.railjournal.com/ , February 9, 2006 - EUROPEAN train leasing company, CBRail, is buying 35 Traxx locomotives from Bombardier in a deal worth $US 156 million. The order is split into 25 multi-system electric locomotives, and 10 diesel-electric locomotives.
CBRail currently has 32 locomotives. The new units, which will be delivered in 2007-08, will be used on cross-border operations throughout Europe. If all options are taken, a total of 70 locomotives could be delivered.
CBRail is a joint venture established by Babcock & Brown, and Bank of Scotland, Britain.

The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) says it is ‘minded to approve’ GC’s bid to run trains from Sunderland and Hartlepool to London, but has rejected a bid by the company to run additional services between Bradford and London.
However, a bid by the franchised train operator on the route, Great North Eastern Railway, to operate extra trains from Leeds to London was also rejected, despite being a major aspiration for the company to meet its franchise payments.
GC will use a five-car version of Bombardier’s Meridian 200km/h dmu to run four trains a day from Sunderland and Hartlepool to London, both places which currently do not have direct services to the capital.
GNER, though, says it is ‘puzzled’ by ORR’s decision, and says it may be forced to abandon plans to electrify 24km of track to create extra capacity. GNER must pay the British government Ł1.3 billion over the course of its 10-year franchise, while GC, as an open-access operator, is exempt from premium payments or subsidy.

The study was requested by the ORR following a number of applications from GNER and Grand Central Railway to run additional services on the line. The ORR asked Network Rail to assess whether the line has sufficient capacity to meet these requirements.
Among the conclusions of this detailed study are:
The East Coast Main Line is already one of the busiest lines on the railway network and enhancements to the infrastructure will be required to provide additional services
There is currently insufficient capacity on parts of the line to satisfy all the stated requirements of both GNER and Grand Central Railway
In order to introduce the proposed services, it would be necessary to alter the access rights of other operators, such as freight traffic and other passenger operators
The level of demand on the line means that there is no capacity for further freight paths beyond the 2005 levels
A spokesman for Network Rail said: “The East Coast Main Line is one of the busiest rail routes in Europe. Our detailed analysis concludes that, without further infrastructure enhancements, it will be very difficult to deliver the additional services proposed by both GNER and Grand Central Railway.”
Following the publication of this consultation the next steps will be:
Interested parties are invited to submit comments on this consultation to Network Rail by 10 January 2006
Network Rail will take these comments into account before publishing a final version of the study

The franchise merges the current South West Trains commuter franchise from London Waterloo, and the small regional Island Line franchise into a single entity, and will start on February 5, 2007. The current operator of both, Stagecoach, has pre-qualified, along with Arriva, First Group, National Express Group, and a joint venture between GNER Holdings and MTR, Hong Kong.
The winning bidder will be announced in the third quarter of 2006.

www.railjournal.com , December 13, 2005 - A CAMPAIGN launched by IRJ in June to prevent the overnight train service linking London with Plymouth and Penzance from being axed came to a successful conclusion today with the announcement by the British government that the train will continue to operate. This is one of the commitments in the new Greater Western franchise which has been awarded to First Group.
The government had asked bidders for the Greater Western franchise to submit separate costs for the operation of the sleeping-car train with a view to withdrawing it. The government claimed that the train did not represent value for money but failed to produce figures to back this up."IRJ's news editor, Andy Roden, has done an excellent job in his spare time as joint chairman of Save Our Sleeper in mounting a highly-successful campaign," said David Briginshaw, editor-in-chief of IRJ. "About 8350 people signed petitions to save the train service following numerous articles in the press, radio broadcasts, and television interviews. Two public meetings were also staged to raise awareness. The project won support from members of the public, business leaders, and even the former governor of the Bank of England, Lord George. This has been probably the most effective railway campaign in Britain for 10 years."

Ide o jednu z hlavných severo-južných staníc King's Cross, kde pozastavili prevádzku po pondelkovom vypuknutí neďalekého požiaru. Desiatky tisíc ľudí boli nútené cestovať náhradnými vlakmi a autobusmi, aby sa dostali do práce.
Asi 1000 osôb evakuovali z ich domovov, keď požiarne čaty vyčlenili 200-metrovú zónu okolo miesta, kde oheň vznikol.
Stanica bude kvôli obavám z možnej explózie zasiahnutých plynových fliaš uzatvorená do dnešných neskorých hodín alebo do stredy. Hasiči už prostredníctvom infračervenej kamery kontrolovali z vrtuľníka, či plynové fľaše vychladli.
